Dear Lisa

I was zoning out last night, just vibing to some old Hip-Hip Tunes and listening to some Rakim, “I Ain’t No Joke”, as he displayed a very lyrical art form and delivery that was undeniably one of the best. Even DMX came with a sound that just grabbed your soul….then I started to listen to BRAND NUBIANS, “Slow Down” with 3 MC’S, GRAND PUBA, LORD JAMAL AND SADAT X, who all had different styles. DAS EFX, REDMAN, EPMD, KRS-1, BIG DADDY KANE, THE WHOLE JUICE CREW, just to name a few more. I was amazed by some of the awesome production on these records, so much so that they made me want to buy beats online and start rapping my very own verses over the top of them.

I started this journey listening to my favorites from the early 80’s, late 80’s, and onto the 90’s, and as me and your sister started to go deeper from East to West Coast, even Midwest and the South, we were re-enlightened by all the different sounds.

From SCARFACE, the Midwest country boy, who made us love that Gangsta shit even if you didn’t live it….to NWA, a West-coast rap group that made us fall in love with songs like, “Fuck The Police” and “Boys in the Hood”. I remember begging my mom to get me a black Raiders coat with the hat to match!

When I first heard BONE THUGS IN HARMONY, it was very hard to understand at first, but it was different and they had a message. Even OUTKAST with “Playas Ball, and “SouthernPlayalisticCadillacMusic”, made me want to visit the South. Hell…the GHETTO MAFIA and GOODIE MOB made me want to live down South (because of the Southern hospitality and the thick women 😉

I know I’m just running off the top but I was zoned out and saying…Damn! None of these artists I mentioned sounded like one another from their delivery, tracks, and style of dress. I’m so proud and honored to be an 80’s baby and grew up listening to real Hip Hop, the core of it all. I mean even these DJ’s are getting lamed out…but that’s another letter.

I’m just tired of the Gimmicks. Everybody sounds the same and looks the same. They have no identity. So I’m sending this letter out to all my true Hip Hop Heads who appreciate artists who give us good music, good substance, and love the art of real Hip Hop.

So please send this letter out and hopefully we can get a CULTURE back that we invented…because now it’s tainted.

REST IN PEACE RAP MUSIC,LONG LIVE HIPHOP!
