HAPPY BLACK HISTORY MONTH x Angela Davis & Watch @Becauseofthem #BlackHistoryMonth Video! ❤️ cc @CNN via @lisafordblog
Happy Black History Month! The photo you see above is of iconic Black Panther activist, Angela Davis, during a 1972 jail interview by Swedish TV journalists — she was charged with but not convicted of murder — in footage that’s part of The Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975 (and I’ll elaborate on this in a moment). My sister was named after Angela Davis, “Angela Yvonne”, so this is why I chose to shine a little light on Davis, in addition to the dope video below presented by positive news website www.becauseofthem.com, for my black history month tribute.
In regards to Angela Davis, NPR wrote, “It probably never occurred to most students of the American black power movement that they should know more about the Swedish outlook on Malcolm X, Stokely Carmichael and Angela Davis. But that’s what The Black Power Mixtape: 1967-1975 provides — a view from abroad, from a country with a particular enthusiasm for the American dissidents of the day — and it’s pretty interesting, if far from definitive.
Assembled from 16mm footage shot for Swedish television, most of it in black and white, the documentary takes a chronological approach to the civil rights movement, the Black Panthers and related phenomena.” Read that story at NPR
We called up lil @angelarye, @donlemon, @AprilDRyan, @Bakari_Sellers and @SymoneDSanders to help us deliver this year’s @Becauseofthem #BlackHistoryMonth Video! ❤️ cc @CNN pic.twitter.com/tZrtPOawBN
