Before ScHoolboy Q, Ab-Soul or Kendrick Lamar, Jay Rock paved the way for the Hip-Hop juggernaut that is now TDE. In fact, many first heard Kendrick on Rock’s anthemic “Hood Gone Love It.” Sadly, it’s been four long years since Jay Rock’s album Follow Me Home was released, and he has been sorely missed. Save for some loosies here and there and some standout feature verses, like his breakout performance on good kid, m.A.A.d. city’s “Money Trees,” Rock has been laying low. After teasing fans with some new material last Fall, it sounds like that all might be about to change.
Today, the Watts MC has released “Money Trees Deuce.” Though the track is completely different than the one on Kendrick’s major label debut, Rock picks up right where he left off in terms of his flow and the themes he covered with his featured appearance. Always speaking from the perspective of someone who’s had a first person view of the struggles of life in the hood, Rock raps about trying to make a better life for himself. The dark, heavy Jazz-tinged track perfectly complements the business-like way in which he describes the harsh circumstances he has to overcome on his journey.
